Salsa is living musical history and it is dancing and music so closely related, that it is often unclear what is meant. With roots in Afro-Cuban Son and other Latin American musical genres, salsa has grown and evolved into a truely global phenomenon.
Its music carries the flavor of different salsa instruments, each contributing to power. The clave sets the rhythmic foundation, while congas provide the steady heartbeat. Bongos add a layer of syncopation, the piano and bass offer the melodic backbone, and the brass section, featuring trumpets and trombones, lends a dynamic punch.
Beginning in the 1970s, salsa started its geographic expansion from the Caribbean and Latino neighborhoods of New York City to dance floors worldwide. It is more than just a music genre, it is also more than just a dance genre. Nowadays, salsa is a word that also acts as an umbrella term for many dancers and communities that also dance bachata, zouk, kizomba and merengue. By the 2000s, salsa had firmly established itself in the global music and dance scene.Â
