Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country of about 7 million people in the Balkans that ranges from mountain areas in the West to the black sea coast in the East. Dance is a very important tradition in Bulgaria and is cherished by many all across the country. The Bulgarian folk dance is a line dance and every municipality has usually several groups practicing and also competing on local and national level.

This enthusiasm for dance extends to Afro-Latin dances. There are small Latin dance communities all over the country, but the main areas are Sofia, the country’s capital and home to almost 20% of the population, and the Black Sea Coast, especially the area around Vargas.

Bulgaria Latin Dance Scenes

There are basically three different dance scenes in Bulgaria. First of all, there are local scenes in the smaller towns and cities all over the country where often the same 10-20 people get together to share their love for dancing. Bansko is an example for that.

The most continuous dance scene is in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. There are about 10 dance events weekly, many of which take place in Club Caliente and Swinging Hall in the southern part of the center. Most of the dancers are locals and expats that mingle with a few tourists. Plus: Sofia brings together the Bulgarian dance community throughout the year. Plus, Sofia hosts the National Salsa Congress in winter and Calle Luna is a local Latin music band that regularly performs throughout the best venues in the city with a focus on latin rock music.

The other major place for dancing is the coast. Mostly the area around Varna, but also Burgas. There, the action is taking place in summer when thousands of tourists from all over Europe fly to Bulgaria to enjoy a beach holiday with plenty of sun and hot temperatures. During that season, several large festivals take place with hundreds of attendees and often beach and pool parties. Already, the first festivals take place end of spring and the last happen at the beginning of autumn when hotel prices are much lower. Most of the action takes place in summer though.
